Definition. A Kubernetes autoscaler that provisions worker nodes just in time. Instead of scaling predefined node groups, Karpenter evaluates pending pods and launches suitable instances directly at the cloud provider. It supports mixed instance types, spot strategies and consolidation of underused nodes.

Why it matters. For variable workloads at mid-sized companies (newsletter delivery, batch imports, image rendering, AI workflows), Karpenter reduces idle costs without teams having to maintain node pools by hand.
