Definition. Infrastructure that an organisation operates itself: on its own hardware, in a co-location facility or in a cloud environment where it controls every layer above the bare machine. Unlike pure SaaS consumption, this also means full responsibility for updates, backups and security.

Why it matters. For mid-sized companies, self-hosting is neither an end in itself nor an obligation. It makes sense where data sovereignty, response time, customisability or compliance justify the extra effort, and where the platform engineering capacity exists.
