Definition. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard through which AI models and agents access external tools, data and services. A system provides an MCP server that offers functions and data sources. An AI client uses them in one standardised form. No separate interface has to be built for each integration.
Why it matters. For mid-sized companies MCP lowers integration effort and avoids proprietary point-to-point connections. Content, inventory or processes become available to agents through an MCP server. Access stays controlled, with authentication and permissions, instead of a black-box special solution.
